Therapeutic approaches
At Epicentred, our therapeutic approach is grounded in proven psychological methods that are specifically tailored to the developmental needs of children and the unique cognitive and emotional profile of epilepsy. Our approach is trauma informed, collaborative and strengths based.
We use a combination of gentle, engaging, and evidence-based therapies to help children manage anxiety, build resilience, and process their experiences. Our core therapeutic frameworks include:
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT):
We adapt traditional CBT to make it engaging and accessible for children aged 5–12. Through playful activities and structured exercises, we teach kids how to identify and reframe "worry thoughts" about their seizures, manage physical symptoms of anxiety, and build healthy coping mechanisms for school and social settings.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT):
For children living with a chronic condition, ACT is a powerful tool. It helps young people learn to accept their diagnosis and the unpredictability of epilepsy without letting it define who they are. We focus on mindfulness and values-based activities, helping kids focus their energy on doing the things they love.
Narrative and Play Therapy
Younger children often do not have the words to express complex anxieties or trauma related to medical procedures and seizures. Play and storytelling allow children to externalize their worries, make sense of their diagnosis in a non-threatening way, and safely process medical trauma.
Every child’s brain and experience with epilepsy are different. We carefully select and blend these evidence-based strategies to match your child’s age, developmental stage, and unique cognitive strengths.
